SMCC Women's Basketball Falls to Pima CC, Gillette College

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (0-9, 0-5 ACCAC) lost 80-34 to Pima CC on Dec. 16 in an ACCAC contest and 74-46 to Gillette College on Dec. 19 in a non-conference game. Against the Aztecs, freshman Mimi Miller posted 10 points and 10 rebounds to record her second double-double. Three days later, sophomore Daziane Stevenson scored 13 and sophomore Hailey Connor added 12 against the Pronghorns. 

Pima CC Recap 

The Cougars trailed 46-16 at halftime and lost 34-18 in the second half. SMCC finished with 45 rebounds and eight steals in defeat. 

Miller made three field goals, including a 3-pointer, and grabbed seven offensive rebounds to post her second career double-double. She is averaging 10.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in nine contests this season. 

Sophomore Jolie King was second on the team with six points and connected on a pair of 3-pointers. She added three rebounds and a steal and is averaging 4.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. 

Freshman Janae Byrd was second on the team with seven rebounds. She also had two assists, three points, and a steal. Freshman Carissa Collier had six rebounds off the bench, and sophomore Kayla Pettet had four points and four rebounds. 

Gillette College Recap 

SMCC trailed 43-15 at halftime but won the third quarter 16-10 and finished with a 31-31 tie in the second half. The Cougars had 44 rebounds and 10 steals in the loss. 

Stevenson made three field goals and seven free throws over 30 minutes to lead the team in scoring. She added three offensive rebounds, one steal, and one assist. She averages 6.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in nine contests this season. 

Connor connected on four field goals and a pair of 3-pointers in 23 minutes. She added three rebounds and a steal and is averaging 6.1 points and 2.6 rebounds in seven games this season. 

Byrd scored eight points off the bench and added four rebounds, four steals, and an assist in 27 minutes. She is averaging 4.4 points and 3.7 rebounds in nine games this season. 

Sophomore Miriam Traore and Collier tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. Five of Collier's rebounds came on the offensive glass, and she added two points, two steals, and an assist. Traore had two offensive rebounds and five points in 17 minutes. 

Freshman Chloe Wiley had five rebounds, and Pettet added three points and four rebounds.
