SMCC Women's Soccer Opens 2023 Season vs. Western Wyoming CC

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College women's soccer team lost 3-0 to Western Wyoming CC in a non-conference home match at the SMCC Soccer Field on Friday, Aug. 18. Sophomore Lucy Millan had to come off the bench to play goalie for the Cougars and responded with eight saves, including stopping a penalty kick, in over 68 minutes of action.

Freshman Marian Oliva started the game in net for SMCC and had five saves in a little more than 15 minutes of work. However, she had to leave the contest after surrendering one goal, and Millan replaced her. At halftime, the score remained 1-0 as Millan made several stops to keep the Cougars within striking distance.

In the second half, Millan repelled a penalty kick in the opening moments of the period before WWCC responded with goals in the 57th and 61st minutes. Millan had to leave the contest later, and sophomore Valeria Rodriguez played the final six minutes in goal for SMCC.

Freshman Aline Cota had the Cougars' only shot of the contest, a bouncing effort late in the first half that nearly put the game on level terms. Western Wyoming finished with 27 shots and 16 corner kicks in the win.
