Cougar Volleyball Battles with the GCU Club Team, Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (4-17) lost 3-2 (25-18, 15-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-10) to the Grand Canyon University Club Team in a non-conference match on Oct. 11. Two days later, the Cougars fell in five sets (25-13, 21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 15-10) in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference match at Scottsdale CC.

Freshman Maleah Reynolds had a season-high 23 kills and sophomore Nikole Lunsford registered 37 digs for the Cougars, but the Antelopes escaped with a five-set victory.

SMCC rebounded from a challenging first set to hit .200 and win sets two and three. The Cougars totaled 27 kills and 11 errors in 80 swings during those two frames. They improved to .273 with 13 kills and four errors on 33 swings in the fourth set but ultimately fell. 

In all, SMCC hit .128 with 51 kills and 28 errors in 179 attacks. The Cougars added 96 digs, 45 assists, 15 assists and 11 service aces.

Reynolds hit .222 with 23 kills and seven errors on 72 attacks and added 14 digs and four service aces in the match. The performance was her fourth double-double of the season.

Lunsford added two service aces to her team-best 37 digs. Sophomore Sienna Cumbie was second on the squad with 22 digs, and she produced two service aces.

Freshman Leilani Clark was second on the team with seven kills, and she added two digs and three block assists. Sophomore Mckenna Androsky and freshman Gabreya Garcia each had six kills. Garcia added two digs and three block assists.

Freshman Maddie Marcotte led SMCC with 23 assists and added three digs, while sophomore Gracie Henderson posted a double-double with 22 assists and 14 digs. She also had three service aces.

Scottsdale CC Recap

The Cougars pushed the nationally ranked Artichokes to a decisive fifth set before falling in a road contest. SMCC hit .189 to win the second set and .256 in the fourth set to tie the match.

SMCC hit .113 for the match with 49 kills and 29 errors in 177 swings, and the Cougars had 15 kills in both the second and fourth set. The SMCC defense posted a season-high 103 digs to go with 46 three blocks and three service aces.

Freshman Madison Cadden posted a season-high 13 kills and hit .119 on 42 attacks. She added seven digs and two service aces. Clark finished with 10 kills, three digs and a block assist.

Garcia posted eight kills and hit .421 on 19 swings, adding one solo stuff and block assist. Reynolds and Androsky had seven kills on the evening, with Reynolds adding 14 digs and Androksy posting four.

Lunsford led the Cougars with 21 digs, and Cumbie chipped in 18 digs, an assist and a service ace. Marcotte posted a season-high 33 assists and added seven digs, while Henderson recorded her second double-double of the week with 12 assists and 15 digs.
