SMCC Women's Volleyball Splits with Mesa CC, Pima CC

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (4-13, 2-5 ACCAC) defeated Mesa CC 3-1 on Sept. 21 and fell 3-1 at Pima CC on Sept. 23 in a pair of Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contests last week. Sophomore Madison Cadden led the Cougars with 16 kills, and freshman Rylee Pitts added a season-high 10 kills as the Cougars overcame a first-set loss to defeat the Thunderbirds. Two days later, Cadden (12 kills) and Pitts (10 kills) led the offensive attack as the Cougars won the opening frame against the Aztecs but lost the next three. 

Mesa CC Recap

The Cougars rallied for a 13-25, 25-23, 31-29 and 25-21 victory over Mesa CC on Sept. 21. SMCC hit .213 for the match, including a .320 clip in the third set, and totaled 46 kills on 141 attacks. 

Cadden hit .229 with 16 kills in 48 swings and added four digs and a block assist. Pitts had 10 kills on 26 attacks and finished with four digs and two block assists. 

Sophomore Emily Wilson added eight kills on 32 attacks and posted 16 digs and three assists, while fellow sophomore Jalyssa Rogers hit .400 with six kills on 15 attacks. 

Freshman Delicea McAuley led SMCC with 43 assists and recorded 10 digs to post her first double-double. Sophomore Imani Cannon led the squad with 26 digs, and freshman Rylee Wengert added a season-high 21 digs. 

Pima CC Recap 

The Cougars opened with a 25-22 victory in the first set, but Pima CC rallied to win the next three: 25-22, 25-12 and 27-25. SMCC hit .221 in 145 attacks and posted 42 kills, 42 assists and 81 digs. 

Cadden led the team with 12 kills and hit .281 on 32 attacks, and she added a season-high 11 digs to post her first double-double of the year. Pitts posted 10 kills for the second-straight contest, hitting .139 on 36 attacks. She had two digs and a block assist. 

Wilson had seven kills, 14 digs and three block assists, and Rogers added six kills, a solo block and two block assists. Freshman Brynley Lynch had five kills on 13 attacks and added three digs, two solo blocks and six block assists. 

McAuley had a team-high 42 assists to go with 11 digs for her second double-double of the week, and Cannon led the Cougars with 20 digs and two service aces. Freshman Shayna Simmers added a season-high 10 digs to go with an ace.
