SMCC Posts Five-Set Win over Glendale CC, Falls to Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (10-14, 5-7 ACCAC) defeated Glendale CC 3-2 in a thrilling ACCAC contest on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the SMCC Gym. SMCC fell 3-1 at Chandler-Gilbert CC in a conference contest two days later. Sophomores Rylee Pitts and Lexi Wasil led the Cougars with 14 kills in the victory over the Gauchos, while Pitts had 15 kills and freshman Rylea Simonich added 11 in the loss to the Coyotes.

The Cougars posted a critical victory over the Gauchos as they fight for a playoff berth: 25-23, 27-29, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12. 

SMCC hit a stunning .391 in the fifth set, finishing with 10 kills and one error in 23 attacks. The Cougars finished the contest with 55 kills in 159 swings to post a .195 hitting percentage. They added 52 assists, 15 service aces, 95 digs, and 10 blocks (eight solo blocks). 

Wasil hit .281 with 14 kills and five errors in 32 attacks and added three digs and a solo block. Pitts finished with 14 kills in 46 swings and added a career-high 29 digs for her eighth double-double. She also recorded one service ace and two solo blocks. 

Freshman Hope Williamson was third on the squad with 10 kills, hitting .179 in 28 attacks. She also had five digs, one service ace, one solo block and one block assist. 

Simonich posted eight kills, four service aces, four digs, two solo blocks, and two block assists. Fellow freshman Ayanna Rae LeBlanc added seven kills, two digs, and two solo blocks. 

Sophomore Delicea McAuley led the Cougars with 50 assists and recorded 12 digs for her eighth double-double. She also had two kills, two service aces, and one block assist. 

Freshman Mikelle McAfee recorded 15 digs and two assists, and sophomore Hayden Rosales added 19 digs and three service aces. 

Chandler-Gilbert CC Recap

The Cougars fell in four sets to the Coyotes in a road match on Oct. 13: 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23. 

SMCC finished with 52 kills and 20 errors in 148 swings to post a .216 hitting percentage. The Cougars added 46 digs, three service aces, 82 digs, and 10 blocks (six solo blocks). 

Pitts finished with 15 kills in 54 attacks and added 14 digs and a block assist to post her second double-double of the week and ninth of the season. 

Simonich was second on the squad with 11 kills, finishing with a .423 hitting percentage on 26 attacks. She also posted three solo blocks and three block assists. 

Wasil finished with nine kills, four digs, one solo block and one block assist, while Williamson posted seven kills, four digs, and a block assist. Rae LeBlanc recorded four kills, a solo block, and a block assist. 

McAuley led SMCC with 46 assists and added 13 digs for her second double-double of the week and ninth of the season. McAfee led the Cougars with 22 digs and added a service ace, while Rosales posted 10 digs.
