Bio

Melissa Joseph enters her seventh year at South Mountain and fourth year as the women's volleyball head coach in the 2022-23 academic school year. Joseph is also an assistant coach for the SMCC beach volleyball team, which started competition in the 2021 spring. She emphasizes the importance of "doing the little things right" and team chemistry and based upon the results in the classroom and on the court, the plan is working.

Since joining the staff, Joseph has helped guide the Cougars to the playoffs twice in her four seasons on staff, including the 2018 season, when the Cougars hosted regionals and finished fifth in the nation.

During her time at SMCC, Joseph has coached seven NJCAA All-Region players, nine All-ACCAC players, an ACCAC Setter of the Year, an ACCAC Player of the year and an NJCAA and AVCA All-American.

Joseph has been coaching club volleyball since 2013, both in Arizona and Colorado. She is currently the Head Coach for Victorium Volleyball Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. where she focuses on developmental and technical skills.

She also served as both a head coach and assistant for the Spiral Volleyball Club in the seasons of 2016 & 2017. Those teams placed 15th at Nationals and fifth in the post-season tournament, respectively.

In 2017 Melissa served as an assistant for the USA Volleyball Arizona High Performance, where her team finished in the top half of the nation.

From 2013-2015 Melissa was a head coach for Mesa Juniors Volleyball Club in Grand Junction, Colorado, where her teams competed in the Rocky Mountain Region. During her time at Grand Junction, she was a student-athlete at Colorado Mesa University, where she received her BS in Exercise Science in 2015.

Joseph received many accolades such as two-time All-Region and All-Conference, two-time AVCA All-American, RMAC Tournament MVP and 2015 CMU Female Athlete of the Year.

After graduation, she played professionally in Klagenfurt, Austria, where she helped lead her team to finished third in the nation.

Formerly Melissa Hess, Coach Joseph is an Arizona Native from Scottsdale, Ariz., where she graduated from Horizon High School in 2011. During her time at HHS, she led her team to Back-to-Back State titles in 2010 & 2011. She received many honors such as two-time All-Region honors, two-time All-State First Team honors and 2011 HHS Female athlete of the year.
