The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team lost 90-47 to Mesa CC in an ACCAC road game on Saturday, Jan. 27. Freshman Janae Byrd scored a career-high 20 points and made three 3-pointers, and freshman Carissa Collier posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars.
SMCC trailed 44-22 at halftime and lost 46-25 in the second half. The Cougars finished with 33 rebounds, 11 assists, eight steals, and two blocks in the loss.
Byrd finished 7 of 19 from the field and made 3 of 4 attempts from beyond the 3-point line. She also made 3 of 4 attempts from the charity stripe and added four rebounds, two assists, and three steals in 38 minutes.
Collier was 4 of 11 from the floor and grabbed 10 rebounds in 34 minutes. Four of her 10 boards came on the offensive glass, and she added an assist, a steal, and a block.
Sophomore Miriam Traore also had 10 rebounds for SMCC, adding seven points, one assist, one steal and one block in 30 minutes. Freshman Mimi Miller had a team-high three assists, and sophomore Kayla Pettet had six points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 30 minutes off the bench.
