SMCC Baseball Falls to Pima CC In Division I Regionals

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (43-15) lost 5-4 on May 4 and May 5 to Pima CC in the Opening Round of the Region I Division I Tournament. The Aztecs rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth to post the win in game one and held off a Cougar rally in the second game to advance to the Regional Championship.

Game One Recap

SMCC broke a scoreless tie in the second on a two-run home run from sophomore Jared Glinski. After Pima CC tied the game with a run in the fourth and a second in the sixth, SMCC scored twice in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. That set the stage for the Aztec comeback as they pushed three across in the eighth to post the comeback win.

Sophomore Carter Richey led SMCC with two hits, and sophomore Connor Schneider had a double and a run scored. Sophomore Jayden Smith had a single and scored a run, freshman Sam Christiansen had a sac fly, and sophomore Core Jackson added an RBI single and a stolen base.

On the mound, sophomore Jacob Beltran started the game for SMCC and went 6.2 innings. He allowed two earned runs and four hits while striking out three. Sophomore Matthew Martinez took the loss with an inning of relief, allowing three earned runs with three walks and two hits. Freshman Alex Urias-Calvillo threw the final 1.1 innings with a strikeout.

Game Two Recap

The Cougars trailed 2-1 after four innings and got within 4-3 in the sixth. After the Aztecs added an insurance run in the seventh, Schneider hit a solo home run to start the eighth to bring SMCC within 5-4. However, that would be as close as the Cougars got as Pima CC held off the rally.

Sophomore Kenneth Jimenez and Schneider led SMCC with two hits in the loss. Schneider added a stolen base to his solo blast, and Brian Leon scored as a courtesy runner for Jimenez.

Smith had a single and scored a run, Glinski added a run and an RBI, and freshman Karsen Waslefsky picked up an RBI.

Sophomore Raul Garayzar started the game for SMCC and took the loss after five innings of work. He allowed three earned runs and seven hits to go with three strikeouts.

Urias-Calvillo tossed 2.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts, two hits and an earned run, and sophomore Jackson Thomas went the final 1.1 innings with one strikeout.
