SMCC Falls in Extra Innings in Region I Division II Championship Game

May 11, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (33-26) overcame an opening-round loss to Pima CC on Thursday, May 8, by defeating Phoenix College and Scottsdale CC on Friday, May 9, to advance to the NJCAA Softball Region I Division II Tournament Final on Saturday, May 10 against the Aztecs. SMCC played all games at Phoenix College.

Four Cougars Earn All-ACCAC Division II Softball Honors

The South Mountain Community College softball team placed four Cougars on the 2025 All-ACCAC Division II honors for their work on the diamond: Dionna Leanio (Outfield), Nadia Rascon (Utility), Sadie Su'a (Battery), and Jerzey Jarvis (Infield). Rascon and Leanio earned First Team honors, Su'a received Second Team honors, and Jarvis collected a Third Team award. Rascon and Leanio also earned a spot on the NJCAA All-Region I Division II team.

SMCC Softball Splits with CGCC to Conclude Regular Season

May 04, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (36-19, 28-14 ACCAC) split an ACCAC doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert CC on May 3, winning game one 18-6 (five innings) before falling 16-7 (five innings) in game two. The Cougars smacked three doubles and three triples in the game-one victory, but the Coyotes used a 12-run inning to split the twin bill on the final day of the 2025 regular season.

SMCC Softball Sweeps PVCC on Sophomore Day

April 28, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (35-18, 27-13 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC home doubleheader with Paradise Valley CC on Saturday, April 26, winning 15-5 (5 innings) and 11-1 (5 innings) on Sophomore Day. Three sophomores (Dionna Leanio, Jada Montoya, Jessica Wallace) had three hits and sophomore Sarah Potter homered in the game-one victory. In game two, the Cougars smacked seven home runs as sophomore Nadia Rascon, freshman Kaeliann Glass, and Potter hit two apiece in the 11-1, five-inning victory.

SMCC Softball Splits with Scottsdale CC

April 23, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (33-18, 25-13 ACCAC) split an ACCAC home doubleheader with Scottsdale CC on April 22, winning 7-0 in game one before falling 11-9 in game two. Sophomore Alyssa Jemio tossed a complete-game shutout and homered, and freshmen Kaeliann Glass and Tazia Blake also went deep in the game-one victory. The Cougars nearly overcame an 11-1 deficit in game two, but their seventh-inning rally fell short.

SMCC Softball Splits with Glendale CC

April 21, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (32-17, 24-12 ACCAC) split an ACCAC doubleheader with Glendale CC on April 19, winning game one 8-3 before falling 14-9 in the second contest. The Cougars slugged four home runs, and sophomore Alyssa Jemio tossed seven strong innings in the game-one victory. In game two, the Gauchos jumped out to an early lead and fended off a late Cougar rally to split the twin bill.

SMCC Softball Falls Twice at Pima CC

April 16, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (31-16, 23-11 ACCAC) lost 10-3 and 10-1 (5 innings) to Pima CC in an ACCAC road doubleheader in Tucson, Ariz., on Tuesday, April 15. Sophomores Dionna Leanio and Jessica Wallace smacked doubles in the game-one loss. Leanio recorded a pair of hits and scored on an RBI single from sophomore Nadia Rascon in game two.

SMCC Softball Records Doubleheader Sweep of Mesa CC

April 11, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (31-14, 23-9 ACCAC) defeated Mesa CC 5-0 and 16-4 (5 innings) in an ACCAC home doubleheader on April 10. Sophomore Sadie Su'a struck out a career-high 13 batters and allowed one hit in a complete-game shutout, and sophomore Jada Montoya blasted a three-run home run in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomore Nadia Rascon, sophomore Michelle Balcazar, and freshman Zaybri Franz belted home runs as the Cougars powered to the sweep.

SMCC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Mesa CC

April 09, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (29-14, 21-9 ACCAC) swept a road doubleheader at Mesa CC on April 8, winning 8-3 in game one and 7-1 in game two. Sophomore Nadia Rascon went 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, and five RBIs, sophomore Dionna Leanio had three hits and scored two runs and freshman Jerzey Jarvis had two hits and three stolen bases in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomore Alyssa Jemio tossed a complete game in the circle and added a double at the plate. Sophomore Jessica Wallace hit her second home run of the season in the win to help lift the Cougars to a sweep of the Thunderbirds.

Cougar Softball Falls Twice at Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College softball team (27-14, 19-9 ACCAC) lost 8-0 (5 innings) and 10-0 (5 innings) to Phoenix College in a road ACCAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 5. Sophomore Dionna Leanio and freshmen Alyssa Jemio and Tazia Blake recorded base hits in the game-one loss for SMCC. In game two, Leanio and sophomore Jada Montoya hit doubles for the Cougars.

SMCC Softball Runs Winning Streak to 15 with Wins over Arizona Christian, Chandler-Gilbert CC

April 02, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (27-12, 19-7 ACCAC) extended its winning streak to 15 straight games with an 11-0, five-inning victory at Arizona Christian University on Mar. 31 and an ACCAC doubleheader sweep of Chandler-Gilbert CC on Apr. 1., at the SMCC Softball Field. Sophomore Elise Saucedo finished 3 for 3 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI, and freshmen Eva Harrison and Jerzey Jarvis added two RBIs to lead the Cougars against the Firestorm. The next day, the Cougars swept the Coyotes 10-2 (5 innings) and 9-1 (5 innings) behind contributions from a host of players, including sophomores Nadia Rascon, who recorded her 100th career hit, and Alyssa Jemio, who tossed a complete game and smacked a home run.

SMCC Softball Extends Winning Streak to a Dozen with Sweep of Pima CC

March 28, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (24-12, 17-7 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC home doubleheader with Pima CC on Mar. 27, winning 3-2 in game one and 12-4 (5 innings) in game two. Freshman Alyssa Jemio tossed a complete game with two unearned runs, and the Cougars put together a three-run fifth inning to record the victory in game one. In game two, sophomore Nadia Rascon hit a pair of home runs, including a two-run blast in the first, and freshman Tazia Blake went a perfect 3 for 3 as the Cougars swept the doubleheader and extended their winning streak to 12 straight games.

SMCC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at PVCC

March 26, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (22-12, 15-7 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC road doubleheader at Paradise Valley CC on Mar. 25, winning 6-2 and 14-0 (5 innings). Freshman Tazia Blake hit the first home run of her Cougar career, finishing 2 for 3 with two runs, and freshman Rebekah Mendoza tossed a complete game in the circle. In game two, sophomore Nadia Rascon hit two home runs and Blake added her second of the day as the Cougars rolled to the run-rule victory.

Balanced Performance Lifts SMCC Softball to Sweep at Scottsdale CC

March 23, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (20-12, 13-7 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC doubleheader at Scottsdale CC on Mar. 22, winning 9-1 (5 innings) in game one and 2-0 in game two. Sophomore Sabrina Erran and freshman Jerzey Jarvis had three hits apiece, and freshman Alyssa Jemio tossed five innings with three strikeouts and zero earned runs in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomore Sadie Su'a tossed a one-hit, complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts, while sophomore Nadia Rascon doubled and scored twice in game two to complete the sweep.

SMCC Softball Powers Past Glendale CC in ACCAC Doubleheader

March 19, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (18-12, 11-7 ACCAC) defeated Glendale CC 13-5 and 18-2 (5 innings) in an ACCAC road doubleheader at GCC on Mar. 18. Freshman Alyssa Jemio tossed a complete in the circle and went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and seven RBIs in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomores Nadia Rascon and Jessica Wallace hit home runs and sophomore Jada Montoya smacked two triples in the run-rule win.

SMCC Softball Stays Busy during Spring Break

March 16, 2025

The South Mountain Community College softball team (16-12) swept non-conference doubleheaders against Dakota County Technical College (MN) on Mar. 11 and Lake Region State College (ND) on Mar. 13 to stay busy during the Spring Break holiday. The Cougars defeated the Blue Knights 8-2 and 19-3 (5) as freshman Rebekah Mendoza tossed a complete game in the first victory, and sophomore McKenna Kraft blasted two home runs in the second win. Two days later, Kraft and freshman Kaeliann Glass smacked home runs and doubles in the game-one win against the Royals, and sophomore Sarah Potter blasted two doubles in her first games since 2023 in game two.
