SMCC Women's Basketball Battles with Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (0-15, 0-10 ACCAC) lost 70-52 to Chandler-Gilbert CC in an ACCAC contest at the SMCC Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Sophomore Hailey Connor scored a career-high 20 points. She added four steals, and freshmen Chloe Wiley and Valery Valezquez finished with 10 points as the Cougars scored their third-most points in a game this season. 

Connor was an efficient 8 of 11 from the floor and connected on two 3-pointers in 26 minutes. Wiley also knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and added four rebounds, three steals, and an assist in 34 minutes. Valezquez was 4 of 10 from the field and added two steals, an assist, and a rebound in 29 minutes off the bench. 

SMCC trailed 30-20 at halftime and won the fourth quarter 21-17. The Cougars finished 18 of 47 (38.3 percent) from the field and 5 of 12 (41.7 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. They added 25 rebounds, 16 steals, and seven assists in the contest. 

Freshman Janae Byrd had eight points, two assists, and two steals in 33 minutes, and freshman Mimi Miller led SMCC with nine rebounds. She also recorded four steals, an assist, and one steal in 38 minutes. Freshman Carissa Collier added five rebounds and three steals in 19 minutes, and sophomore Miriam Traore had two assists and a steal.
