SMCC Women's Golf Wins Coyote Classic to Set Program Milestone

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College women's golf team won the Coyote Classic Mar. 25-26 at Las Colinas Golf Course in Queen Creek, Ariz. The Cougars led wire-to-wire at the event, firing a 307 in the first round and a 306 in the second round to edge Mesa CC by four strokes and post the first tournament win in program history. Individually, sophomore Kylie Rehberger placed second at +5 (147), and freshman Angelina Borg-Malec took sixth at +9 (151).

SMCC's opening-round 307 was one shot better than Mesa CC, and the Cougars increased their final lead to four strokes with their second-round 306. SMCC had placed second at its previous four spring tournaments under first-year head coach Brady Edwards

Rehberger posted rounds of 75 and 72 to finish three strokes behind Pima CC's Maria Harrouch for individual medalist honors. Her two-round score of 147 matched her season best, which came at Mesa Thunderbird Invitational at Dobson Ranch Golf Course.

Borg-Malec improved by one stroke in her second round, going from 76 to 75 to place eighth. Her two-round score of 151 was nine strokes better than her season best, which she had recorded at the Paradise Valley Invitational at Cave Creek Golf Course.

Sophomore Trixie Sabulao tied for seventh at +12 (154) with rounds of 76 and 78, giving her a season-best performance that was 16 strokes better than her previous mark. Freshman Mia Hill tied for 12th at +21 (163), a new season best by four strokes, with scores of 82 and 81, and freshman Raquel Pargas tied for 17th at +26 (168) with rounds of 80 and 88.

SMCC restarted its women's golf program in 2020 under then-head coach Chelsea Carroll. She would lead the Cougars in 2021 and 2022, helping take SMCC to the 2022 District Championships in Texas. In 2021, two players (Miriam Verdugo and Jenna Lee) qualified as individuals for the NJCAA Championships in Florida. Last season, Rehberger earned All-District, All-Region and All-Conference honors and tied for 52nd at the 2022 NJCAA Division II National Championships in Florida.
