SMCC Women's Volleyball Falls to Glendale CC, Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (2-11, 0-5 ACCAC) lost 3-0 to Glendale CC on Sept. 11 and 3-2 to Chandler-Gilbert CC on Sept. 13 in a pair of ACCAC road matches. Against the Gauchos, sophomore Rylea Simonich led the Cougars with 14 kills and added seven digs. Two days later, sophomore Ayanna Rae LeBlanc recorded a career-high 12 kills, sophomore Hope Williamson dished out a career-high 48 assists, and Simonich posted 22 kills. 

Glendale CC Recap

The Cougars fell to the nationally ranked Gauchos in straight sets: 26-24, 25-20, 25-20. SMCC totaled 28 kills on 109 attacks to register a .179 hitting percentage. The Cougars added 28 assists, five service aces, 66 digs, four solo blocks, and six block assists. 

Simonich had 14 kills on 45 swings to hit .289 in three sets. She added seven digs and one service ace. 

Williamson posted her second career double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs. She added two kills, one service ace, and two block assists. 

Freshman Alyssa Szymanski was second on the team with four kills and added a dig and solo block. Sophomore Savannah Collings posted three kills and had two solo blocks, one block assist, and one dig.

Sophomore Mikelle McAfee led SMCC with 20 digs and added two assists. Freshman Bailee Baca had 12 kills, and sophomore Helen Altagracia had six. 

Chandler-Gilbert CC Recap

The Cougars and Coyotes battled over five sets, with CGCC narrowly prevailing: 25-23, 20-25, 25-12, 14-25, 15-12. SMCC hit .233 in 150 attacks with 53 kills. The Cougars added 53 assists, nine service aces, 80 digs, four solo blocks, and 20 block assists over the five sets. 

LeBlanc set a new career high with 12 kills and hit .391 in 23 attacks. She added six digs, four solo blocks, and three service aces over four sets. 

Williamson recorded her second double-double of the week with 48 assists and 10 digs. She added three block assists, one solo block, and one service ace. 

Simonich tied a career-best with 22 kills and hit .268 on 56 swings. She added 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and also had two solo blocks, three block assists, one service ace, and one assist. 

Szymanski set a new season high with eight kills and added two digs and three block assists. Baca and Collings had four kills apiece, with Baca recording 12 digs while Collings had four block assists and one service ace. 

McAfee led SMCC with 24 digs and added two assists, and Altagracia had a season-high 10 digs.
