Men’s Golf Claims Scottsdale Invitational Title

The South Mountain Community College men's golf team fired a 4-under 284 in the second round to capture the Scottsdale Men's Invitational. The Cougars finished the two-day tournament at Hillcrest Golf Course at 11-over (587), and five student-athletes finished tied for 10th or better at the event.

After firing a 15-over 303 on Friday, the team responded with solid play Saturday to wrap up the tournament title. Three SMCC golfers posted final-day scores under par, one finished at even par, and all six Cougars placed in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard.

Freshman Gabriel Salvanera led the squad by finishing at even par for the event to place second overall. He fired a -1 on the second day, including an eagle three on the par-5 fourth hole. He also added three birdies during his round.

Sophomore Jonathan Walters placed second on the squad and fifth overall at +3. On Saturday, Walterman finished -2 for the round and recorded four birdies on the day. He had only two bogies on the day and was -2 on the front nine.

Sophomore Caden Weber was the third Cougar to finish under par in the second round, finishing at -1 for the day. He had five birdies on the front nine to help improve to a tie for seventh at the event.

Freshman Ryan Macpherson finished at even-par on Saturday to post a sixth-place individual finish. He had three birdies on the front nine and finished at 5-over 149 for the two days. Sophomore Samuel Salisbury finished tied for 10th after carding a 3-over 75 on Saturday. He birdied 18 on Saturday to finish at seven-over 151 for the event. Sophomore Matthew Halvorson tied for 11th at the event after posting identical 5-over 77 on each day. On Saturday, he had a birdie and 12 pars.

The Cougars continue their 2020 season with an event hosted by Chandler-Gilbert Community College at the Lone Tree Golf Club starting on Feb. 18.
