SMCC Men's Golf, Dillon Dean Claim Cougars Spring Invitational Titles

The South Mountain Community College men's golf team finished at 27-under 549 in the Cougars Spring Invitational, which was held April 2-3 at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen, Ariz. Trailing by three strokes after the first round of play, the Cougars finished at 23-under 265 in the second round to win the event by 18 strokes. Individually, freshman Dillon Dean won his third-straight event with a score of 12-under 132, which included a 10-under 62 in his second round. 

SMCC put together an incredible second day to leapfrog Eastern Arizona and win the tournament. 

Dean's performance was nothing short of spectacular. He started with an eagle three on the second and followed it up with eight birdies over the next 16 holes, securing the individual medalist honors with a comfortable six-stroke lead. His first round was equally impressive, with an eagle two on No. 8 and a strong finish with four birdies over the final five holes. 

Another standout performer was freshman Eric Klutke, who secured the second spot at the event with a score of 6-under 138. He posted consistent rounds of 70 and 68, with four birdies in his first round and a strong finish with five birdies over his second 18. His performance was highlighted by an eagle two on No. 17. 

Sophomore Brady Clark placed fourth at 3-under 141 with scores of 71 and 70. He carded three birdies in his first round and four in his second. 

Fellow sophomore Cole Finch posted a nine-improvement in his second round to finish seventh at 1-under 143. He went from 4-over 76 on the first day to 5-under 67 on day two with six birdies, including five on the front nine. 

Freshman Nicklaus Ummel placed 14th at 1-over 145 with scores of 73 and 72. He had two birdies in his first round and four in his second round. 

Freshman Tyler Walker also had a solid second round and moved up 15 spots on the leaderboard to finish 16th at 3-over 147. He had eight birdies in his second round and recorded scores of 79 and 68.
