Men’s Golf Wins Eastern Arizona Invitational

The South Mountain Community College men's golf team won the Eastern Arizona Men's Invitational Mar. 9-10 at the Mount Graham Golf Course in Safford, AZ. Jonathan Walters led the Cougars with a two-under, 142 to tie for second and three other SMCC student-athletes finished in the top 10 as SMCC won its fourth-straight event.

Squaring off against a host of ACCAC opposition, South Mountain Community College (293) held a two-stroke lead over Eastern Arizona (295) after one day of competition. The second day saw SMCC fire a six-stroke improvement to tie with Mesa CC for the low score on the day and claim the tournament title.

Walters posted an identical one-under 71 in both of his rounds at the event. He finished two strokes off the individual medalist, Eastern Arizona's Leon Acikalin, and shared second place with Mesa CC's Dylan Middlemiss.

Gabriel Salvanera took fourth at the tournament after posting a three-under 69 on Mar. 10, the lowest round of the day. He finished at one-under 143 for the event.

Caden Weber carded scores of 73 and 74 to finish at a three-over 147 and place seventh. Ryan Macpherson tied for eighth after recording a 75 and a 73, respectively, over the two rounds to finish at four-over 148.

Sam Salisbury tied for 13th with a six-over 150, and Matthew Halvorson was 23rd with a 10-over 154 for the event.

The Cougars concluded their year having won each of the four they competed in during the spring 2020 season.
