SMCC Softball Rolls to Doubleheader Sweep over PVCC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (4-1, 2-0 ACCAC) swept a road doubleheader at Paradise Valley Community College on Tuesday, Feb. 27, winning 15-1 (5 innings) and 10-0 in the Cougars' ACCAC opener. In game one, sophomore Iliana Munoz homered and doubled to finish with six RBIs as sophomore Mykenzie Flores fanned six to record her first win. Fellow sophomore Adenira Marquez tossed a two-hit shutout with five K's, and freshman Dionna Leanio had three hits and a stolen base in the win.  

Game One Recap

The Cougars struck for seven runs in the first inning en route to a 15-1, five-inning victory over the Pumas. They added two in the third and four in the sixth and finished with nine hits and eight walks in the win. 

Munoz went 3 for 4 with two runs and matched a career-high with six RBIs. She doubled in the third and went deep in the fourth for her second home run of the season and 18th of her career. 

Flores worked around two hits and four walks to allow one earned run in 5.0 innings and record her first win. 

Leanio and freshman Taylor Christensen each had two hits in the win. Leanio scored twice, drove in two runs, doubled, and stole a base, while Christensen had a pair of RBIs, a double, and a run scored. 

Sophomore Vanessa Philpot collected the team's fourth double and added two runs, a stolen bases, and an RBI. Freshman Nadia Rascon finished with two runs, a single, an RBI, two walks, and a sac fly. Freshman Azlynn Madrid scored twice and added a steal. 

Game Two Recap 

The Cougars continued to click in game two of the doubleheader, posting a 10-0 victory to sweep their conference opener. 

Marquez scattered two hits and one walk over seven innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the season. 

Leanio went 3 for 4 from her lead-off spot, scoring twice and stealing a base. Rascon led SMCC with three RBIs and scored a run, and Madrid scored twice and stole two bags. 

Freshmen Jasmyne Campos and Michelle Balcazar scored runs, and Balcazar picked up a double. Philpot had the team's second double and added an RBi, and freshman Marissa Quihuis had a two-run, pinch-hit single.
