SMCC Softball Falls Twice at Arizona Western

The South Mountain Community College softball team (4-3. 2-2 ACCAC) lost both ends of an ACCAC doubleheader at Arizona Western on Saturday, Mar. 2, in Yuma. The Cougars fell 5-1 in game one and 8-3 in game two to the Matadors in their only conference meeting. 

Game One Recap

SMCC closed to within 2-1 in the fifth inning, but the Matadors scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to post the 5-1 victory. 

Five Cougars collected base hits in the loss, including a double from sophomore Iliana Munoz. Freshman Sabrina Erran had an RBI and stole two bases, and freshman Elise Saucedo also had two stolen bases and scored the team's run. 

Freshman Taylor Christensen took the loss in the circle for SMCC. She tossed 6.0 innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs, and two walks to go with five strikeouts.  

Game Two Recap

SMCC struck for a run in the first, but AWC responded with two runs in the first and second and led 6-2 after four frames. The Cougars added a run in the sixth, but the Matadors tacked on two runs in their half to post the 8-3 victory. 

Freshman Dionna Leanio led SMCC with three hits; she added three stolen bases and scored two runs. She is batting .682 with seven stolen bases in seven games this season. 

Munoz had two RBIs, and fellow sophomore Mia Franco recorded an RBI single. 

Sophomore Angelica Tello (0-2) took the loss after 4.0 innings of work, allowing two earned runs and fanned three. Sophomores Mykenzie Flores and Adenira Marquez tossed an inning of relief.
