Verdugo Leads SMCC with Eighth-Place Finish at Estrella Mountain Women's Invitational

Sophomore Miriam Verdugo finished eighth at the Estrella Mountain Women's Invitational to lead the South Mountain Community College women's golf program to a third-place finish. Freshman Emma Fisher gave the Cougars top Top-10 finishers at the event on Apr. 2-3 at Sundance Golf Course in Avondale, Ariz. 

Verdugo carded rounds of 93 and 97 to finish at 46-over, 190 and eighth on the leaderboard. Fisher finished five shots off her pace, recording rounds of 97 and 98 to take 10th at 51-over, 195. 

Freshman Jenna Lee was among three golfers to tie for 12th, finishing at 62-over, 206 with rounds of 102 and 104. Sophomore Victoria Negrete was 18th at 100-over, 244 and freshman Gracie Henderson was 19th at 138-over, 282. 

As a team, SMCC opened with a 413 and finished with a 422 to take third with 259-over, 835. 

The Cougars continue their 2021 spring season with the Chandler-Gilbert CC Women's Invitational on Apr. 17-18 at Las Colinas Golf Course in Queen Creek, Ariz.
