SMCC Baseball Sweeps Eastern Arizona to Extend Winning Streak

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (30-19, 20-12 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC doubleheader at Eastern Arizona on April 16, winning 6-1 in seven innings in game one and 17-5 victory in game two. Sophomore Nikolas Miller tossed six innings with six strikeouts in the game one victory, and sophomore Stephen Hernandez fanned four and allowed one hit over seven innings in the game two victory. Offensively, sophomore Dominic Chacon hit three home runs on the day, including a pair in the game two victory, to raise his season total to 11 and six in his last six games. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars got an outstanding performance from Miller, who improved to 9-1 on the season. He scattered five hits, one earned run, and no walks with six strikeouts. Sophomore Alex Urias-Calvillo threw the seventh inning for SMCC and allowed one hit. 

SMCC scored two runs in the first: Chacon had an RBI groundout to score freshman Joe Terranova, and sophomore Karsen Waslefsky had an RBI single to score sophomore Wylie Waters. In the second, freshman Christopher Mata smacked a two-out RBI single to score freshman Brady Lord

Chacon blasted his first home run of the day in the fifth, a two-run shot that scored Waters. He finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs and a stolen base. Waters drew a pair of walks and finished 1 for 2 with two runs and a stolen base. Terranova also scored twice and had a stolen base, and Mata had an RBI and the team's fourth stolen base. 

Game Two Recap

Leading 1-0 through four innings, SMCC scored 16 runs over the final five innings to post a 17-5 victory and sweep the doubleheader and season series with the Gila Monsters. 

Hernandez allowed one hit over seven innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the year. He struck out four and walked three. Mata and freshman David Galindo saw time in relief for the Cougars. 

Freshman Raul Parada plated Waslefsky with an RBI single in the second to give SMCC the early lead. In the fifth, Terranova brought home sophomore Jaden Miranda with an RBI single and Waters and Chacon scored on separate wild pitches.

Miranda scored on a passed ball in the sixth, and Chacon smashed a three-run home run later in the frame that scored Terranova and Waters.

Chacon's second home run of the game in the eighth was a two-run shot that plated Waters. Sophomore Carlos Vega added a two-run double and came home on an RBI single from Miranda. 

SMCC wrapped up its scoring in the ninth with RBI doubles from sophomore Niko Rosell and Vega and an RBI single from Miranda. 

Chacon finished 3 for 5 with two home runs, four runs, five RBIs, a double, and a walk. Vega was second on the team with four RBIs and finished 2 for 6 with two runs and two doubles. 

Miranda went 3 for 5 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base, while Waslefsky was 4 for 5 with three runs and a walk. Rosell finished 3 for 5 with two runs, an RBI, a double, and a walk, and Terranova was 3 for 5 with a run, an RBI, and a walk.

Waters was 3 for 6 with three runs, and freshman Marcus Romero had two hits.
