In a rematch of the 2024 NJCAA Division I West District Championship, the South Mountain Community College baseball team (1-5) lost a doubleheader at Southern Nevada on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The Cougars fell 6-4 (7 innings) and 3-2 (7 innings) to the Coyotes despite a two-run home run from freshman Drew Johnson in game one and extra-base hits from sophomores Marcus Romero and Raul Parada.
Game One Recap
SMCC jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the top of the fourth, but CSN responded with four runs in their half of the frame to take a 5-4. The Coyotes added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-4, seven-inning victory.
Romero tripled to open the third and scored on an RBI groundout from sophomore Brady Lord. Sophomore Christopher Mata drew a walk, stole second, and moved to third on a balk. He came home on a sacrifice fly from Bryan Lorenz to give SMCC a 2-0 advantage.
In the fourth, freshman Derek Montijo singled with one out and trotted home on Johnson's two-run home run. Montijo finished 2 for 4 with the run, and Johnson finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a walk.
Freshman Thomas Peck (0-1) took the loss on the mound with four innings of work. He fanned two and allowed six hits, five earned runs, and two walks. Freshman Braeden McCarroll tossed two innings of relief with three hits and one earned run.
Game Two Recap
SMCC led 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, but CSN scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. The Cougars immediately tied the game in the fifth, but they suffered a walk-off loss in the bottom of the seventh.
Romero drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk in the second for an easy RBI, and Parada doubled to right-center to bring home Lorenz and tie the game in the fifth. Parada had a pair of hits, and sophomore Jaden Upper and freshman Nuri Todd recorded stolen bases.
Sophomore Matt Elliot (0-1) took the loss with 2.1 innings of relief despite five strikeouts. The Coyotes scored the winning run after a lead-off single, a sac bunt, and a stolen base that generated a throwing error.
Freshman Grant Young started the game for SMCC and went 2.2 innings with one hit, two walks, and two K's. Freshman Sam Yeager tossed 1.1 innings of relief with three hits and two earned runs.
