SMCC Baseball Falls Twice at Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (5-7) lost 9-3 and 7-3 in a pair of seven-inning games in Coolidge on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Freshman Bobby Pierce Jr. had a pair of hits, a run, an RBI, and a stolen base, and freshman Nuri Todd added a two-run single in the game one loss. In game two, sophomore Raul Parada hit his team-leading eighth double, Pierce Jr. had a pair of hits, and sophomore Luke Jones had a sacrifice fly. 

Game One Recap

The Vaqueros scored five runs in the first and added four insurance runs after SMCC cut the lead to 5-3 in the second. 

In the second, freshman Jaden Leon singled with one out and moved to second after sophomore Brayden Grantham drew a walk. Pierce Jr. brought in Leon with a two-out, RBI single and Todd added a two-run, two-out single that scored Grantham and Pierce Jr.

Pierce Jr. finished 2 for 4 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base, while Todd was 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Freshman Cody Estes added a base hit for SMCC in addition to Leon. 

Freshman Thomas Peck took the loss after an inning of work with four hits, four earned runs, and two walks. Freshman Santiago DiBene tossed 1.2 innings with four hits, two earned runs, and a walk, and freshman Sam Yeager threw 3.1 innings with two hits, one earned run, and three strikeouts. 

Game Two Recap

Central Arizona scored early and led 7-0 through four innings before SMCC rallied for three late runs in a 7-3 loss. 

Jones hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score sophomore Joe Terranova and break the shutout. Freshman Bryan Lorenz scored later in the frame on a wild pitch. 

In the seventh, a pitch hit freshman Maxton Peck with two outs, and he scored on Parada's eighth double of the year. 

Sophomore Michael Caruso took the loss with 3.2 innings of work with four hits, five earned runs, three walks, and a strikeout. Freshman Quinn Robertson tossed 1.1 innings of relief with one hit, two earned runs, one walk, and one strikeout. Finally, sophomore Jack Cecil threw a scoreless relief frame.
