Benedictine-Mesa Edges SMCC Men's Volleyball

The South Mountain Community College men's volleyball team lost 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-16, 26-24) to Benedictine-Mesa on Feb. 3 at the SMCC Gym. The Cougars overcame a 23-20 deficit in the opening set to win 25-23, but the Redhawks claimed the following three sets to claim the victory. 

SMCC hit a blistering .529 in the first set, collecting 10 kills and one error in 17 attempts. The Cougars rebounded from tough hitting in sets two and three to post 11 kills and a .296 hitting percentage in the fourth set. SMCC totaled 33 kills and 11 errors in 83 attempts for a .265 hitting percentage for the four sets. 

Freshman Zach Brown led SMCC with 10 kills on 25 attacks and posted a .320-hitting percentage. He added four digs, a solo block and a block assist in five sets of work. 

Sophomore John Engelbert had seven kills on 12 swings for a .500 hitting percentage. He added two assists, two aces and a team-high six digs. 

Freshman Brandon Pauole led SMCC with 23 assists and added four kills, two aces, four digs and two block assists. Freshman Patrick Meyer posted four kills, and two block assists and fellow freshman Connor McCann had three kills, a dig, and a solo block.
