SMCC Men's Volleyball Posts Historic Win over Park-Gilbert

The South Mountain Community College men's volleyball team defeated Park-Gilbert 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 21-25, 27-25, 17-15) at the SMCC Gym on Feb. 22 to post the first win in the program's history. Trailing 2-1 at the start of the fourth set, the Cougars rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets against the Buccaneers by totaling 21 kills in 52 attacks. 

SMCC finished with 57 kills on 143 attacks for the match, compiling a .224 hitting percentage. The Cougars added 41 assists, eight service aces, five solo blocks and 16 block assists to defeat the Buccaneers. 

The Cougars hit .310 with 13 kills and four errors on 29 swings in their third-set win and produced eight kills and three errors on 23 swings to hit .217 in the fifth and final frame. In their second-set win, SMCC finished with 15 kills and two errors on 32 attacks for a .406 hitting percentage.  

Freshman Connor McCann led SMCC with 13 kills on 26 attacks. He hit .426 over the five sets and added a service ace, two digs, one solo block and five block assists. 

Freshmen Zach Brown and Michael Howell each had 12 kills in the win. Brown hit .226 on 31 attacks and added a service ace, five digs, two solo blocks and a block assist, while Howell had five digs and two solo blocks. 

Freshman Brandon Pauole led the Cougars with 38 assists and added four kills, a service ace, three digs and a block assist. Sophomore Andy Sanchez led SMCC with seven digs and added a kill, an assist and a service ace. 

Freshman Karson Bingham produced four kills in two sets, freshman Patrick Mayer added four kills and three block assists, and sophomore John Engelbert finished with five kills, two service aces and four block assists. Sophomore Mario Abril added two kills, a service ace, a dig and two block assists.
