SMCC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (29-14, 21-9 ACCAC) swept a road doubleheader at Mesa CC on April 8, winning 8-3 in game one and 7-1 in game two. Sophomore Nadia Rascon went 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, and five RBIs, sophomore Dionna Leanio had three hits and scored two runs and freshman Jerzey Jarvis had two hits and three stolen bases in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomore Alyssa Jemio tossed a complete game in the circle and added a double at the plate. Sophomore Jessica Wallace hit her second home run of the season in the win to help lift the Cougars to a sweep of the Thunderbirds. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars scored five runs over the first two innings and added three more in the fourth to win 8-3 in game one of the twin bill. 

Leanio walked to start the game and scored on an RBI double from Rascon, who then scored on an RBI single from Jemio.

In the second, freshman Eva Harrison made it to second on an error with one out and scored on an RBI single from Jarvis. With two outs, Rascon hit an RBI single to score Jarvis, and Leanio scored on the play as a result of an error. 

In the fourth, Rascon belted a three-run home run that brought home Leanio and freshman Kaeliann Glass. Rascon finished 3 for 4 with two runs, five RBIs, and missed hitting for the cycle by a triple. 

Leanio was 2 for 3 with three runs and two walks, while Jarvis went 2 for 4 with a run, an RBI, and three stolen bases. Sophomore Sadie Su'a had the team's third double. 

Freshman Rebekah Mendoza improved to 6-2 on the season with five innings in the circle. She allowed five hits, one earned run, and five walks to go with three strikeouts. Freshman Kayle James tossed two innings of relief work with no hits and one earned run. 

Game Two Recap

Scoreless into the fourth, the Cougars struck for three runs in the frame, added single runs in the fifth and the sixth, and posted two more in the seventh to sweep the doubleheader behind a 7-1 victory.  

Jemio led off the fourth with a single and moved to second after Su'a drew a walk, and a pitch hit sophomore Michelle Balcazar to load the bases. Freshman Tazia Blake brought home Jemio and Su'a with a two-run single, and Wallace picked up an RBI single to score Blake. 

SMCC added a run in the fifth on an MCC error that allowed sophomore Jada Montoya to score. Wallace blasted a solo home run in the sixth, and Su'a hit an RBI double, and Blake added an RBI single in the seventh. 

Wallace was 2 for 2 with a run, two RBIs, two walks, and the home run, while Blake was 2 for 4 with a run and three RBIs. Jemio had two hits, including a double, and sophomore Elise Saucedo was the fourth Cougar with two hits. 

Jemio went all seven innings to improve to 8-4 on the season. She scattered four hits, one earned run, and one walk plus three strikeouts.
