SMCC Softball Falls Twice at Pima CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (31-16, 23-11 ACCAC) lost 10-3 and 10-1 (5 innings) to Pima CC in an ACCAC road doubleheader in Tucson, Ariz., on Tuesday, April 15. Sophomores Dionna Leanio and Jessica Wallace smacked doubles in the game-one loss. Leanio recorded a pair of hits and scored on an RBI single from sophomore Nadia Rascon in game two. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the host Aztecs immediately took the lead in their half of the frame and posted a 10-3 victory. 

Leanio led off the game with a double to center and scored on an error off the bat of sophomore Jada Montoya. With two outs in the inning, sophomore Michelle Balcazar brought in Montoya with an RBI single. 

SMCC got back to within 4-3 in the fourth when sophomore Sabrina Erran singled, and Wallace doubled to start the inning. Freshman Jerzey Jarvis brought in Erran with an RBI sacrifice bunt. 

However, the Aztecs scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull away for the win. 

Sophomore Alyssa Jemio took the loss in the circle, dropping her record to 8-5 on the season. She allowed 12 hits, four earned runs, and one walk in five innings. Freshman Kayle James tossed an inning of hitless relief. 

Game Two Recap

Leanio finished 2 for 2 with a walk and run, but the Aztecs scored multiple runs over the final three innings to post the 10-1, five-inning victory. 

In the loss, Rascon picked up her 57th RBI of the season, and freshman Kaeliann Glass had the team's fourth hit. 

James took the loss with three innings of work in the circle, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, and a walk. Freshman Rebekah Mendoza tossed 1.1 innings of relief and allowed two hits, three earned runs, and two walks.
