The South Mountain Community College volleyball team defeated Phoenix College 3-1 (25-27, 25-23, 25-23, 27-25) on Oct. 16 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest. The Cougars overcame a first-set loss to win the next three as Hayley Meshay led SMCC with 18 kills on 35 swings.
The Bears posted needed extra points to win the opening frame, but after that the Cougars' defense took control of the match. SMCC held PC to a .165 hitting percentage for the rest of the contest, including a .062 mark in the final set.
Meshay hit .314 on the match and added 17 assists and five block assists. Mikki Nielsen was second on the team with 15 kills on 30 swings, hitting .233 for the match. Jayden Gormley had eight kills and hit .312 in 16 attacks, and Alyssa McDowell, Madison Wampler and Elizabeth Clemit all had at least six kills.
