SMCC Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Pima CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (41-13, 25-11 ACCAC) split an ACCAC road doubleheader at Pima CC on April 25, falling 6-4 (7 innings) in game one before rallying for a 10-4 victory in the second contest. The Cougars led 4-2 early, but the Aztecs rallied for four runs over the fourth and fifth to win. In the second game, sophomore Carter Richey blasted a double and a home run, and the SMCC offense led wire-to-wire to split the twinbill. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars scored three runs in the second and one in the third to lead 4-2. The Aztecs pushed three runs across in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead and added an insurance run in the fifth to seal the victory. 

Sophomore Jared Glinski led SMCC with three hits in the loss and posted a run and an RBI. Sophomores Jayden Smith and Core Jackson had two hits for the Cougars, with Jackson adding an RBI.

Freshman Dominic Chacon also had two hits and scored a pair of runs and sophomore Connor Schneider went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. 

Sophomore Raul Garayzar took the loss for SMCC and fell to 6-2 on the season. He went five innings with six strikeouts, four walks, and four earned runs. Freshman Alex Urias-Calvillo threw the sixth inning and allowed one hit with one strikeout. 

Game Two Recap

SMCC led 6-4 after five innings and added insurance runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth to split the doubleheader. SMCC pounded out 16 hits in the victory, including the two extra-base hits from Richey. The sophomore catcher finished 3-for-5 with a run, two RBIs, his ninth double and his conference-leading 12th home run. 

Schneider went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs, a stolen base and a run. Jackson and Chacon each had three hits in the win, with Jackson scoring twice and Chacon touching home plate three times in addition to a stolen base. Glinski was 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBi and a stolen base, while freshman Sam Christiansen added an RBI. 

Sophomore Matthew Martinez earned the win and improved to 6-3 on the season with 3.1 innings of relief. He struck out three batters and walked one. Freshman Nikolas Miller started the game for SMCC and went 4.2 innings with six strikeouts, four earned runs and three walks. Freshman Matthew Lighthall had a pair of strikeouts in the ninth inning to complete the win.
