SMCC Baseball Splits with Cochise, Earns No. 2 Seed in Region Tournament

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (43-13, 27-11 ACCAC) split its final ACCAC doubleheader of the season, falling 3-2 (7 innings) in game one before winning 10-9 (10 innings) in game two in a twinbill against Cochise College on April 27. By winning that final game in extra innings, the Cougars earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NJCAA Region I Division I tournament, where they will host Pima CC in a three-game series on May 4-6. 

Game One Recap

The Apaches pushed across a single run in the first and second, and the Cougars cut into the lead with a run in the fourth. Cochise would score what turned out to be the winning run in the sixth and held off an SMCC rally in the ninth that produced a run. 

Sophomore Jayden Smith led SMCC with two hits and added a run scored and a stolen base. Sophomores Carter Richey and Jared Glinski both smacked doubles, with Glinski picking up an RBI. Sophomore Core Jackson had an RBI, freshman Jaden Miranda scored a run and freshman Karsen Waslefsky had a single. 

On the mound, freshman Brandon Koble fell to 3-1 with five innings of work. He fanned two, walked three and allowed six hits. Sophomore Josaiah Estrella threw the sixth inning and had a strikeout.  

Game Two Recap

SMCC scored a pair in the first, but the Apaches answered with a run in the second and third to tie the game. The Cougars pushed ahead 4-2 in the fourth, only to see Cochise tie the game again in the fifth.

In the sixth, SMCC scored twice, but Cochise pushed four runs across to take an 8-6 lead. The Cougars fought back with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 9-8 lead. The Apaches responded with a run in its half of the eighth to tie the game before the Cougars scored a run in the 10th to complete the comeback victory. 

Richey and Waslefsky led SMCC with three hits apiece in the victory. Richey produced a double, a triple and two RBIs, while Waslefsky doubled and had two runs and two RBIs. 

Freshman Sam Christiansen and sophomore Kenneth Jimenez hit home runs in the win. Christiansen went 1-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs, two walks and his fourth home run of the season. Jimenez went 1-for-4 with a sac bunt, two RBIs and his third home run. 

Freshman Dominic Chacon had a double and scored a run, and sophomore Connor Schneider drew two walks, stole a base and scored a run. Glinski scored a run, Jackson had a pair of RBIs, and Smith added a stolen base and a run scored. 

Freshman Alex Urias-Calvillo picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief. He fanned four, walked one and did not allow a hit to improve to 5-2 on the season. 

Sophomore Jaxon Jelkin started the game for SMCC and went four innings with four strikeouts, three walks and two earned runs. Sophomore Jackson Thomas tossed an inning with two earned runs and two strikeouts, and sophomore Matthew Lighthall went two innings with a strikeout and five earned runs.
