SMCC Baseball Records Shutout Victory over Southern Nevada

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (5-6) lost three of four games in a series with Southern Nevada on Feb. 9-10 in Nevada. The Cougars pulled out a 1-0 victory in game two of the series, but fell 4-3, 5-2, and 4-2 to the Coyotes.

Game One Recap

SMCC led 3-1 heading into the seventh inning, but CSN rallied for three runs to post a walk-off 4-3 victory.

The Cougars led 2-0 after scoring twice with two outs in the top of the third. Dominic Chacon blasted an RBI double that scored sophomore Jaden Miranda, and sophomore Niko Rosell plated Chacon with an RBI single.

After the Coyotes pulled a run back in their half of the third, freshman Marcus Romero reached on an error that scored Chacon from third.

However, CSN rallied for three walks and a single in the bottom of the seventh and posted the 4-3 victory.

Chacon finished 2-for-3 with two runs, two stolen bases, and an RBI. Freshman Joe Terranova also had two steals, and Romero added the team's fifth stolen base.

Sophomore Nikolas Miller started the game for SMCC and went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and one earned run. Sophomore Alex Urias-Calvillo had three strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. Freshman Matt Elliott and sophomore Stryder Salas also saw time on the mound for SMCC.

Game Two Recap

SMCC scored the game's only run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to post the 1-0 victory.

Rosell started the frame with a single, and Terranova replaced him as a pinch runner. Romero singled on the infield to move Terranova to second, and with one out, Chacon walked to load the bases.

That brought up freshman Luke Jones, who struck out, but the third strike ran wild and allowed Terranova to score the winning run.

Freshmen Stephen HernandezDavid Galindo, and Christopher Mata combined to shut out CSN over nine innings. Hernandez fanned three, Galindo struck out four, and Mata had two K's over the final three innings to earn the win.

Game Three Recap

SMCC led 2-1 after the top of the fourth, but the Coyotes scored four runs in their half of the frame en route to a 5-2 victory.

In the third, Mata singled to start the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Brady Lord. Chacon then singled to right field to score Mata and tie the contest at 1-1.

In the fourth, freshman Landon Springmeyer led off the inning with a single and moved up 90 feet when Miranda reached on a fielding error. The duo moved into scoring position on a groundout, and Springmeyer scored on an RBI groundout from freshman Zac Chapman to put SMCC ahead 2-1.

That lead would be short-lived as CSN scored the game's final four runs in the fourth and held on for a 5-2 win.

Freshman Max Mazinter started the game and went 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and four earned runs. Sophomore Kaden Gray tossed two innings of relief and fanned two.

Game Four Recap

SMCC led 2-0 early, but CSN rallied again to record a 4-2 victory in the series finale.

In the second, Romero singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Springmeyer. Chapman then started the third with a single and moved to second on a single from Terranova. Sophomore Karsen Waslefsky drove Chapman home with an RBI single to double their advantage.

CSN would score runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game and added two more runs in the sixth to take the 4-2 victory.

Sophomore Matthew Lighthall started the game for SMCC and went 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and two earned runs. Luis Martin Romero tossed the final 1.1 innings and allowed two earned runs.
