SMCC Baseball Splits ACCAC Series with Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (11-14, 5-7 ACCAC) split an ACCAC series with Phoenix College, falling 6-5 in 11 innings on the road on Mar. 5 before posting a 12-2, seven-inning home victory on Mar. 6. Sophomore Wylie Waters blasted a home run and sophomore Dominic Chacon had a two-run double in the 6-5 loss, while Waters and freshman Jaden Upper produced three-hit performances in the 12-2 victory. 

Game One Recap

The two teams battled back and forth in a tight contest that the Bears eventually claimed in extra innings. The Bears broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cougars responded with two runs in the top of the eighth. PC then posted the walk-off victory in the 11th. 

Freshman Joe Terranova and sophomore Niko Rosell led SMCC with two hits, with Rosell scoring a run. Waters blasted the first home run of his Cougar career and added a walk, and Upper posted an RBI. Sophomore Jaden Miranda had a base hit and scored a run, and freshmen Marcus Romero and Christopher Mata scored. 

Freshman Stephen Hernandez started the game for SMCC and pitched 6.0 innings, with three strikeouts and three earned runs. Freshman Luis Martin Romero took the loss in 4.1 innings of relief, allowing seven hits and one earned run. 

Game Two Recap 

The Cougars rebounded with a 12-2, seven-inning home win to split the conference series. SMCC trailed 2-1 headed into the bottom of the sixth when they scored twice via an error and a hit batter with the bases loaded. 

The bottom of the seventh saw the Cougars score nine times to post the walk-off victory. Upper started the rally with an RBI single, freshman Brady Lord roped a two-run double, and a sac fly from sophomore Karsen Waslefsky led to a pair of PC errors that enabled the Cougars to post the run-rule victory. 

Upper finished 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs, and Waters was 3 for 5 with two runs and a double. Chacon went 1 for 2 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk, and two stolen bases, and Rosell added an RBI. 

Freshman Raul Parada walked twice and went 1 for 2 with a run scored, and Lord added a stolen base and sac bunt to his RBI double. 

Sophomore Nikolas Miller improved to 3-1 on the season with 6.0 innings of work. He fanned seven and allowed five hits and two earned runs to earn the win. Sophomore Matthew Lighthall tossed the seventh inning for SMCC.
