Cougar Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at PVCC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (9-3, 6-2 ACCAC) defeated Paradise Valley Community College 2-1 (7) and 20-1 (7) in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference road doubleheader on Mar. 9. In the first game, Carter Krosky and Shawn Triplett combined to hold the Pumas to four hits while Brice Martinez and Michael Quinones scored runs. In the second game, the Cougar offense scored multiple runs in six of the seven innings, and Andrew LucasBrodie Marino and Esteban Hernandez hit home runs in the victory. 

Game One

The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to edge the Pumas.  

Krosky (2-0) was effective for SMCC, tossing 5.1 innings with four hits, two strikeouts and one earned run. Triplett threw the final 1.2 innings, fanning two and not allowing a hit for his second save of the season. 

PVCC opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third. In the fifth, Martinez started the frame with an infield single. He moved to third on a single from Quinones and then scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Quinones later scored on an RBI sacrifice from Clayton Kempski

Martinez had two hits, Dustin Bermudez had the Cougars' fourth hit, and Paul Sachen had a stolen base in the win. 

Game Two

SMCC totaled 20 runs and 19 hits in seven innings to complete the doubleheader sweep. 

Six Cougars finished with multiple hits in the win: Bermudez, McKay Barney, Quinones, Hernandez, Sachen and Brodie Marino. Six Cougars scored multiple runs in the win: Bermudez, Holden Breeze, Lucas, Gillis Champagne, Hernandez and Sachen. Six Cougars also had multiple RBIs: Bermudez, Braden Campbell, Lucas, Quinones, Hernandez and Marino. Dylan Fesperman and Sachen each doubled in the win. 

Lucas opened the scoring with a three-run home run in the first inning. In the second inning, the Cougars scored six runs, including a home run by Hernandez and RBI singles from Breeze and Quinones. 

Marino homered to start the third, and Breeze had an RBI single later in the frame. In the fourth, Marino, Bermudez and Barney had three-straight RBI singles. Marino drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth, and Campbell had an RBI single in the frame.

Mason Skaugrud had an RBI single in the sixth, and in the seventh, Fesperman had an RBI double to score Noah Bachman, and Hernandez added an RBI single.

Nolan Livsey (1-1) tossed five innings on the mound and had four strikeouts and one earned run. Ben Meyerson had two strikeouts in the sixth, and Ronan Kopp struck out three batters in the seventh.

The Cougars return to action on Mar. 13 with an ACCAC doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert CC. The first game starts at noon.
