SMCC Baseball Sweeps Non-Conference Series with Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (28-19) swept a non-conference series with Phoenix College, winning 19-7 (7 innings) on April 12 and 11-6 on April 13. The Cougars posted 19 runs and 15 hits over six innings, highlighted by home runs from sophomore Wylie Waters and Dominic Chacon. The next day, Chacon homered again, and freshman Brady Lord finished 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, and three RBIs. 

April 12 Recap

The Cougars scored 14 runs and sent 19 batters to the plate in the third inning en route to a 19-7, seven-inning home victory over the Bears. SMCC would add five runs in the fifth to post the run-rule victory. 

The third inning started with an RBI single from sophomore Karsen Waslefsky and a two-run single from sophomore Niko Rosell. Freshman Christopher Mata added another two-run single before Waters cleared the bases with a three-run home run to make it 10-1 Cougars. Chacon then roped a triple and scored on a second RBI single from Waslefsky. A few errors extended the frame, and sophomore Jaden Miranda recorded an RBI single. 

In the fifth, SMCC loaded the bases with two outs when Waters brought home two with a double. Chacon then blasted a three-run home run to center. 

Waters finished 4 for 5 with a season-high five RBIs, five RBIs and his third home run of the season. Chacon went 2 for 2 with three runs, three RBIs, two walks, a triple, and his seventh home run of the season. 

Waslefsky was 2 for 5 with two runs, a stolen base, and three RBIs. Lord was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs, and Miranda was 2 for 4 with a run, an RBI and a walk. Rosell finished 1 for 2 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base.  

Sophomore Nikolas Miller (8-1) earned the win with two innings of relief work and fanned three batters. Sophomore Stephen Hernandez started the game for SMCC and went two innings with two Ks. Freshman Matt Elliot struck out four Bears in two innings, and sophomore Brandon Koble had two Ks in the ninth. 

April 13 Recap

Lord missed hitting for the cycle by a home run, and Chacon homered for the second time in as many days as the Cougars defeated the Bears 11-6. 

SMCC scored two runs in the second, four in the third, three in the fifth, and two in the ninth and posted 14 hits. Rosell and freshmen Luke Jones and Marcus Romero hit doubles to join Lord. 

Lord had an RBI triple in the second and scored on a wild pitch. Chacon hit a three-run home run in the third, and Lord collected an RBI double. Romero had an RBI groundout in the fifth and scored on a wild pitch, and Jones had an RBI double in the frame. 

Lord had an RBI single in the ninth and stole home for the game's final run. He finished 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, two runs, three RBIs, and two stolen bases. 

Chacon hit his eighth home run of the season and increased his RBI total to 29 for the year. Romero went 2 for 4 with three runs, a double, and a stolen base, while Rosell had a pair of hits and scored once. 

Freshman Joe Terranova walked twice, stole two bases, and scored a run, and Miranda scored a run and stole a base. 

Freshman Luis Martin Romero (4-5) earned the win with an inning of relief and two strikeouts. Freshman Max Mazinter started the game for SMCC and went three innings with eight strikeouts. 

Freshman Ian Armbruster struck out the side in his inning of relief, and Aeneas ClarkKaden GrayStryder Salas, and David Galindo all saw time out of the bullpen.
