Cougar Baseball Sweeps Cochise College in ACCAC Doubleheader

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (24-19, 16-12 ACCAC) defeated Cochise Collge 7-0 (7 innings) and 8-3 in an ACCAC doubleheader at the SMCC Baseball Field on Saturday, April 6. Sophomore Nikolas Miller tossed six innings of two-hit scoreless baseball, and--- sophomore Niko Rosell had a three-run double to help lead SMCC to the victory in game one. In game two, the Cougars led wire-to-wire and used a five-run eighth inning to snuff out any chances of a Cochise rally.

Game One Recap

Scoreless through four and a half innings, the Cougars broke open the game with a five-run frame highlighted by Rosell's bases-loaded, three-run double. Earlier in the inning, sophomore Dominic Chacon laced an RBI single and freshman Raul Parada later drove in Rosell with a two-out RBI single.

Freshmen Christopher Mata and Joe Terranova came home on different wild pitches in the bottom of the fifth.

All those runs would be more than enough for Miller (7-1), who went 6.0 innings to earn the victory. He struck out nine and walked two to improve to 7-1 on the season. Sophomore Kaden Gray tossed the seventh and one strikeout.

Rosell finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs, a double, and a run scored. Chacon also had two hits, finishing 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Mata scored twice, and Parada went 2 for 3 with the RBI single.

Game Two Recap

SMCC scored runs in the first and second innings and added a third in the sixth to lead 3-1. In the eighth, the Cougars put the game out of reach with five runs and eventually won 8-3.

In the first, Sophomore Wylie Waters scored on a wild pitch. In the second, sophomore Carlos Vega doubled to right and scored on an RBI double to left by freshman Landon Springmeyer

In the sixth, Rosell scored on an error off the bat of freshman Marcus Romero. Rosell, Vega, and Springmeyer reached safely to start the eighth, and Rosell scored on an RBi single from Jaden Miranda. Mata brought Vega and Springmeyer home with a two-run single, and Cochise's miscues allowed two more runs to score in the frame.

Springmeyer and Romero led SMCC with two hits, while Rosell and Vega scored twice. Mata led the team with two RBIs, and Chacon walked three times, had a hit, and stole a base.

Freshman David Galindo (4-3) earned the win with 4.2 innings of relief on the hill. He allowed three hits, two unearned runs, and two walks to go with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Stephen Hernandez started the game for SMCC and went 4.0 innings with five hits, one earned run, two walks, and five K's. Sophomore Alex Urias-Calvillo recorded the final out of the game.
