SMCC Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Cochise College

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (15-5, 10-4 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cochise College on Mar. 20, falling 7-6 in game one before winning the second contest 5-1. In the first game, Cochise jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held off a late Cougar rally. In the second game, the Cougars scored three runs in the first two innings to back solid performances from a quartet of SMCC pitchers.

Game One

Michael Quinones finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and Andrew Lucas hit a three-run home run, but the Cougars could not overcome an early deficit.

Cochise scored a run in the first and added four in the second. SMCC responded with runs in the third and fourth, but the Apaches added two runs in the fifth. That set up SMCC's comeback attempt, which brought home a run in the sixth and three in the seventh but came up one short of tying the game.

Esteban Hernandez added a double and an RBI. McKay Barney and Brice Martinez each finished 1-for-4 with a run scored, while Justin Quinn and Clayton Kempski had singles.

Alec Stanfield (0-1) started the game for the Cougars, tossing 4.1 innings with six strikeouts and six earned runs. TJ Czyz threw the final 1.2 innings, fanning one with two hits.

Game Two

Four SMCC pitchers combined to limit Cochise to one run and seven hits over nine innings to lift the Cougars to the victory.

Derek Decolati started the game and had three strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. Matt Bohnert (1-3) earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief, fanning two with one earned run. Trent Adams tossed 1.1 innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout. Finally, Shawn Triplett earned his fifth save of the year with three innings of relief work with five K's.

Four Cougars finished with two hits in the victory as SMCC posted its 15th road win of the year: Quinn, Lucas, Hernandez and Dustin Bermudez

Quinn and Bermudez each blasted home runs in the win, and Hernandez added his second double of the day. Martinez had two stolen bases and an RBI, while Quinones also drove in a run.

The Cougars continue their road trip to start the 2021 season on Mar. 23 with a doubleheader at Central Arizona. The first game starts at 11 a.m.
