Cougar Baseball Falls Twice at Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (15-7, 10-6 ACCAC) lost 12-2 and 7-1 to Central Arizona in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader in Coolidge, Ariz., on Mar. 23. In the first game, the Cougars led 2-1 but an eight-run third pushed the Vaqueros to the victory. In the second game, Central Arizona scored four runs in the first and added three in the fourth to complete the doubleheader sweep. 

Game One

The Cougars led early, but the Central Arizona offense scored 11 runs over the final three innings to post a 12-2, five-inning victory. 

Brice Martinez had two hits, two stolen bases and scored a run in the loss. Justin Quinn had a double, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base, Clayton Kempski had the Cougars' fourth hit and McKay Barney added an RBi. 

Martinez led off the game with a single and later scored on a groundout from Barney. After Central Arizona tied the game, Kempski started the third with a single and Paul Sachen replaced him as a courtesy runner. He then scored on a sac fly from Quinn. 

However, the Vaqueros scored eight runs in the third off SMCC starter Carter Krosky. He had three Ks and allowed nine hits in his three innings of work. TJ Czyz tossed the final 1.2 innings of work, allowing three runs with two strikeouts. 

Game Two

The Cougars fell behind early and could not overcome the early deficit. 

Central Arizona scored four runs off SMCC starter Drew Woody in the first inning. He finished with two strikeouts in three innings of work. The Vaqueros added three runs, although two were unearned, in the fourth off Andrew Lucas

From there, Ben Meyerson had seven strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief and Ryan Figueroa had a strikeout in one inning of work. 

Martinez had another two base hits in the loss, adding a run scored. Gillis Champagne added a double, and Sachen had a base hit and a stolen base. 

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 24 with a 3 p.m. game at Paradise Valley Community College. SMCC then travels to Glendale Community College for a ACCAC doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 27, with the first game starting at noon.
