Trio of Cougars Earn All-ACCAC Honors

South Mountain Community College baseball sophomores Shawn Triplett and Justin Quinn and freshman Brice Martinez earned All-ACCAC honors, as voted upon by the league's coaches, for their work during the 2021 season. Triplett earned First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region honors. Quinn received First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Region honors, and Martinez received a Second Team All-Conference award. 

Triplett, a 6-0 relief pitcher from Providence, Utah, led the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference with 11 saves. He finished 3-0 with a 0.92 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 29.1 innings of work. Triplett nailed down a pair of victories against Cochise College and Yavapai College and recorded two wins over GateWay Community College. He struck out a season-high five batters in two games and did not allow an earned run until the final day of the regular season. 

Quinn, a 6-1 outfielder from Chandler, Ariz., had a strong season offensively for the Cougars. He batted .329 with 11 doubles, four triples, five home runs, 32 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. Quinn scored 33 runs and posted a .386 on-base and .548 slugging percentages. He tied for 12th in the ACCAC in doubles and tied for fourth in triples. Quinn had a season-high three hits on five occasions, scored a season-high four runs in a win over Scottsdale CC and had a season-high four RBIs in a win over Central Arizona. 

Martinez, a 5-11 infielder from Denver, batted .333 and scored a team-high 37 runs. He tied for the team lead with 18 stolen bases, which tied for ninth in the conference, and six doubles, one home run and 17 RBIs. He hit a game-winning, walk-off home run and had a season-high three RBIs in a 10-9 win over Pima CC in the 2021 home finale and scored a season-high three runs three times. In addition, he had a season-high four hits in a win over GateWay CC and produced a season-high three stolen bases in a win over Arizona Western. 

With a 25-13 mark in conference play, the Cougars finished fourth in the Region I, Division I standings. SMCC will travel to Central Arizona to face the host Vaqueros and Cochise College in a three-team regional that runs from May 6-8. The winner of that three-team regional will face the winner of a regional at Pima CC featuring the host Aztecs, Arizona Western and Yavapai College in a best-of-three series May 13-15 for a berth to the National Junior College World Series.
