Cougars Split Midweek ACCAC Series with Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (17-17, 7-11 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference two-game series with Mesa CC on Mar. 22 and 23. The Cougars won the first game of the series 9-5 behind a seven-run seventh inning before falling 8-7 in a close second game. 

Game One Recap 

Trailing 5-1 in the seventh inning, SMCC scored seven runs in the frame and added an insurance run in the eighth to defeat the Thunderbirds 9-5. The Cougars pounded 15 hits, including three home runs and two doubles, and stole seven bases in the victory. 

Gustavo Sosa led SMCC with three hits in the win, scoring a pair of runs with a double and a stolen base. Esteban HernandezTaylor TractenbergConnor Schneider and Carter Richey had two hits for the Cougars. 

Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, and Schneider added a round-tripper, two runs scored and a steal. Tractenberg was 2-for-4 with a run scored, a stolen base and two RBIs, and Richey finished with a run, a steal and an RBI. 

Brian Leon hit the third Cougar home run, a two-run blast, and he added a stolen base. Kyle Alexander had the team's second double, and Drew Bond and Josaiah Estrella recorded stolen bases. 

Jacob Beltran (6-0) earned the win on the mound with three innings of hitless relief. He fanned three and walked one. Eric Perez tossed 2.2 innings of one-hit relief work with three K's, and Raul Garayzar started the game for SMCC. He went 3.1 innings with four earned runs. 

Game Two Recap

SMCC rallied to tie the game at 7-7 in the fifth, but MCC scored the winning run in the seventh to post the 8-7 victory. The Thunderbirds led 4-2 after three innings and 7-3 after four. 

Leon and K. Alexander finished with three hits in defeat. Leon scored a run and walked twice, while K. Alexander had four RBIs and a double. 

Sosa hit a home run and finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk. Richey added a double and a walk, and Bond stole his second base in as many days. 

Carter Krosky started the game for the Cougars, tossing four innings with five strikeouts and four earned runs. Bond tossed an inning of relief, and Alec Stanfield (0-2) and Matthew Martinez threw multiple innings for SMCC.
