Cougar Baseball Sweeps Scottsdale CC in ACCAC Series

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (32-10, 18-8 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale CC 4-2 on April 4 and 16-5 (7 innings) on April 5 in a pair of ACCAC games. Sophomore Carter Richey blasted his league-leading 10th home run of the season, and Raul Garayzar had seven strikeouts in seven innings of work in the April 4 home victory. In the April 5 road win, freshmen Dominic Chacon and Sam Christiansen hit home runs, and the Cougars scored in every inning in the run-rule victory. 

April 4 Recap 

SMCC scored a run in the second, third and fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. SCC scored a pair of runs on a throwing error in the fifth before the Cougars plated an insurance run in the eighth to secure the victory. 

Richey finished 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the fourth. He added a second RBI in the eighth when he walked with the bases loaded. 

Garayzar improved to 6-1 on the season with his work on the mound. He worked around three hits and three walks, and none of the three runs were earned. 

Freshman Nikolas Miller earned his first save of the year with 1.1 innings of relief work. He fanned and walked one Artichoke. 

Christiansen finished 2-for-3 with two runs, a stolen base and a walk, and fellow rookie Karsen Waslefsky was 2-for-4 with a double, and a run scored.

April 5 Recap 

The teams exchanged runs early in the contest, and SMCC led 7-4 after three innings. The Cougars scored four in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to finish with 16 runs and 12 hits. 

Chacon went 2-for-2 with three runs, two RBIs, two walks, a stolen base and his fourth home run of the season, and Christiansen was 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs, two stolen bases, a walk and his third home run of the year. 

Sophomore Jared Glinski went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs and an RBI, and sophomore Kenneth Jimenez was 2-for-2 with a run and two walks. Sophomore Brian Leon scored five times, partly as a courtesy runner for Jimenez, in the victory. 

Waslefsky walked three times and added a double, three RBIs, and a run scored. Sophomore Connor Schneider scored two runs with two walks and a hit. Sophomore Core Jackson had the team's third double and added an RBI, and Richey drove in a pair. 

Freshman Brandon Koble earned the win to move to 2-1 on the season. He tossed five innings with three strikeouts and worked around seven hits and a walk. Freshman Austin Balmes tossed the final two innings and fanned one.
