SMCC Baseball Splits Road Doubleheader at Arizona Western

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (33-11, 19-9 ACCAC) split an ACCAC road doubleheader at Arizona Western on April 8, falling 6-2 (7 innings) in game one before posting a 13-1 victory (7 innings) in the second game. Arizona Western led 3-1 after two innings and added three insurance runs in the fifth to post the game-one victory. In the second game, SMCC responded with multiple runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to post the run-rule victory. 

Game One Recap

Freshman Karsen Waslefsky hit a pair of doubles to raise his season total to a team-high 15 and added an RBI. Freshman Dominic Chacon and sophomore Michael Diaz had doubles and scored a run for SMCC, and sophomore Core Jackson added a single and a stolen base. 

On the mound, sophomore Jaxon Jelkin took the loss to fall to 6-2 on the season. He allowed six earned runs and six walks in 4.1 innings with five strikeouts. Sophomore Josaiah Estrella tossed the final 1.2 innings and had a pair of strikeouts. 

Game Two Recap

Sophomore Carter Richey hit his league-leading 11th home run of the season and finished 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs, and a walk. Freshman Jaden Miranda hit his second home run of the season, and he finished 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBIs, a stolen base and a walk.

Sophomore Jared Glinski and Jackson each had two hits in the win. Glinski was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk, while Jackson was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a walk. 

Freshman Sam Christiansen added a two-run single, sophomore Kenneth Jimenez had an RBI and Chacon scored twice in the win. Sophomore Landen Argabright added an RBi, sophomore Brian Leon scored twice, and freshman Evan VanerValk scored a run. 

Sophomore Jacob Beltran tossed six innings of shutout baseball with nine strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 6-2 on the season. Sophomore Matthew Martinez tossed an inning of relief with two strikeouts and a hit.
