SMCC Baseball Splits Midweek Series with Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (38-12, 22-10 ACCAC) split a midweek ACCAC road series at Central Arizona, falling 1-0 in 10 innings on April 18 before posting an 8-4 comeback victory on April 19. The two teams battled in a scoreless contest until extra frames when the Vaqueros pushed across a run to post the victory. SMCC responded the next day with a comeback victory to split the season series, overcoming a 4-3 deficit after the fourth with two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and two in the ninth. 

April 18 Recap

A pitchers duel ensued between the two squads on Tuesday, April 18, in Coolidge. Sophomore Raul Garayzar tossed seven innings of scoreless baseball with eight strikeouts. He scattered two hits and four walks. Sophomore Matthew Martinez took the loss, allowing four hits, one earned run and two walks in 2.2 innings of work. He also had four strikeouts.  

Offensively, sophomore Carter Richey led SMCC with a pair of singles. Freshman Sam Christiansen added a double, and Core JacksonJayden Smith, and Connor Schneider all had base hits. Sophomore Brian Leon recorded a sacrifice bunt as well.  

However, Central Arizona's Theo Millas and Mario Bejarano combined to strike out seven Cougars over 10 innings in the win. 

April 19 Recap

SMCC rallied for an 8-4 victory to halve the season series (2-2) with the league-leading Central Arizona.  

Sophomores Jared Glinski and Jackson led SMCC with two hits apiece in the victory. Jackson scored three runs and added a double and a walk, while Glinski doubled, drove in two, and stole a base. 

Christiansen had the team's third double and added an RBI and freshman Dominic Chacon and Smith posted a single and a run. Karsen Waslfefsky and Richey had RBI singles, and Waslefsky added a stolen base. Leon scored twice as a courtesy runner for the SMCC catcher. 

On the mound, freshman Nikolas Miller improved to 4-1 on the season with 5.2 innings of relief work. He fanned four, walked one and scattered three hits. Freshman Alex Urias-Calvillo started for SMCC and went 3.1 innings with two earned runs and four strikeouts.
