Cougar Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Yavapai College

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (40-12, 24-10 ACCAC) defeated Yavapai College 7-5 (7 innings) and 15-6 in an ACCAC doubleheader in Prescott, Ariz., on April 22. Sophomore Core Jackson had two doubles, two RBIs and two runs, and sophomore Matthew Martinez tossed 2.1 innings of relief work as SMCC scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to push past the Roughriders in game one. In the second game, the Cougars smacked five extra-base hits, including three doubles and a home run from freshman Dominic Chacon, as SMCC used a 10-run seventh inning to roar to a 15-6 victory and season sweep. 

Game One Recap

SMCC scored a run in the first but trailed 3-1 heading into the fifth. The Cougars posted four runs in the frame, but Yavapai responded with two in its half to tie the game at 5-5. However, the Cougars scratched across a pair of runs in the seventh, and Martinez sealed the victory on the mound. 

Martinez went 2.1 innings in relief to improve to 5-3 on the season. He did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out one batter. Sophomore Jaxon Jelkin started the game and went 4.2 innings with eight hits, five earned runs and five strikeouts. 

Offensively, Jackson, freshman Jayden Smith, and sophomore Jared Glinski had two hits to lead SMCC. Glinski had the team's third double and a pair of RBIs, and Smith scored a pair of runs. 

Sophomore Carter Richey went 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks, Chacon scored a run, and sophomore Kenneth Jimenez had an RBI. 

Game Two Recap

SMCC led 4-2 after four innings, but the game eventually knotted at 5-5 after the sixth. That led to a 10-run seventh inning for the Cougars, who went on to win 15-6. 

Freshman Karsen Waslefsky and Smith led seven Cougars with muti-hit efforts with three hits. Waslefsky scored two runs and had two RBIs, and Smith finished with a run scored and a walk. 

Chacon hit his fifth home run of the season and went 2-for-5 with two runs, four RBIs and a walk. Freshman Connor Schneider finished 2-for-4 with three runs, a double, a triple and an RBI, and Jackson finished 2-for-5 with a double, a run and three RBIs. 

Freshman Jaden Miranda went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs, and Glinski had his second double of the day and finished with a run scored and a walk. 

Freshman Sam Christiansen was 2-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs, Richey drew two walks and sophomore Brian Leon scored a pair of runs. 

Freshman Alex Urias-Calvillo earned the win in relief, getting a strikeout to end the sixth. Sophomore Jacob Beltran started the game for SMCC and went 5.2 innings with six hits, two earned runs and eight strikeouts.

Sophomore Jackson Thomas threw the seventh and eighth innings, allowing a hit and two walks with a strikeout. Sophomore Matthew Lighthall had a strikeout in a clean ninth inning.
