SCC Edges SMCC Men's Basketball 90-88

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (5-6, 1-3 ACCAC) lost 90-88 to Scottsdale Community College at Cougar Gym on Dec. 1 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest. Sophomore Demonte Demore and freshman Darien Allen each scored 19 points off the bench and a third, sophomore Elijah Melendez, finished with 17 points, but the Artichokes edged the Cougars with a jumpshot with less than 10 seconds left in the game.  

There was little separating the two teams and SCC clinched the victory in the waning moments of the contest. SMCC shot 43.7 percent from the field and knocked down a season-high 10 3-pointers. The Cougars also shot 76.2 percent from the free throw line, grabbed 35 rebounds and dished out a season-high 26 assists. 

Demore added a team-high seven rebounds and knocked down a season-high 11 free throws to his 19 points in 23 minutes off the bench. Allen was 8-of-11 fromt he field, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists in 27 minutes off the bench. 

Melendez went 6-of-13 from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers in 26 minutes off the bench. Sophomores Fahad Tarjali and Jalen Gant each had seen points in a starting role, and fellow sophomore Angel Villa had six points and a team-high seven assists in 22 minutes. Sophomore Davion Stringer finished with eight points, four assists and two 3-pointers in 18 minutes off the bench.
