SMCC Men's Basketball Downs Glendale CC to Claim Season Series

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team defeated Glendale CC 84-75 in an ACCAC road contest on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Sophomore Jaylen Wesley led SMCC with 27 points and 16 rebounds, and four other Cougars scored in double-figures to help lift the team to a series victory over the Gauchos. 

SMCC trailed 48-40 at halftime but out-scored GCC 44-27 over the final 20 minutes to claim the road victory. The Cougars shot 45 percent (27 of 60) from the field and 88 percent (22 of 25) from the free-throw line. They totaled 38 rebounds, 13 assists, 11 steals, and six blocks in the win. 

Wesley was 9 of 16 from the floor, and six of his 16 rebounds came on the offensive glass. He also posted four blocks, two assists, and two steals while playing all 40 minutes. 

Freshman Parker Escalante was second on the team with 15 points, finishing 4 of 8 from the field and 7 of 7 from the free-throw line. He added four rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block in 26 minutes. 

Freshman Bobby Holcomb scored 14 points and knocked down two 3-pointers. He added three rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 24 minutes. 

Sophomore Nyzhir Brown posted 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and added three rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 30 minutes. 

Freshman Deven Johnson came off the bench to post 11 points in 18 minutes. He added two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the victory. 

Freshman Deavon Felix added four points and three rebounds, and freshman Torian Gant posted three points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 14 reserve minutes.
