SMCC Men's Basketball Falls to Arizona Western

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 76-56 at Arizona Western in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest on Dec. 10. Sophomores Darien Allen and Steven Cervantes led the Cougars with 12 points. Still, the Matadors held SMCC to 27.6 percent shooting from the field while shooting 48.1 percent themselves to post the 20-point win. 

SMCC trailed 42-27 after 20 minutes, and the Matadors won the second half 34-29. The Cougars made eight 3-pointers, grabbed 29 rebounds, dished out nine assists and had 11 steals. 

Allen went 3-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He also had two rebounds and a steal in 26 minutes. Cervantes came off the bench to knock down 4-of-7 attempts from behind the 3-point line. He also had a rebound and a steal in 15 minutes. 

Freshman Aaron Johnson had eight points, four rebounds and an assist in 11 minutes. Sophomore Abdi Odowaay had six points on a pair of 3-pointers, and freshman Jake Clapped scored seven points in 13 minutes as a reserve.
