Eastern Arizona Defeats SMCC Men's Basketball

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 59-43 at Eastern Arizona in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest on Dec. 14. Sophomore Abdi Odowaay led SMCC with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, but the Gila Monsters held a 12-rebound advantage and has 12 steals to help them post the victory. 

Odowaay finished 5-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from the 3-point line, and he added three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 28 minutes. Odowaay is now averaging 9.2 points in 10 games and two starts this season. Sophomore Darien Allen posted nine points, two rebounds and a steal in 33 minutes. He leads SMCC in scoring through 10 games, averaging 13.7 points on 48.7 percent shooting. 

Sophomore Steven Cervantes had six points, three rebounds and a team-high five assists in 30 minutes off the bench. Freshman Jaylen Wesley had five points and was one of three Cougars (Khabri Davis, Jimmy Causey Jr.) to have four rebounds in the loss. Causey Jr. added five steals, four points and an assist, while Davis had three points. 

SMCC shot 30.9 percent (17-of-55) from the field and had 26 rebounds, 11 assists and nine steals. Eastern Arizona led 31-25 at halftime and won the second half 28-18.
