Cougar Men's Hoops Posts Road Win at Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team defeated Central Arizona 70-62 in an ACCAC road game on Jan. 28. The Cougars led 40-20 after 20 minutes and held off a Vaquero rally in the second half to post their second road win of the season. Sophomore Darien Allen led SMCC with 15 points, freshman Jaylen Wesley added 14, and two other Cougars finished in double-figures in the victory.  

The Cougars finished at 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the 3-point range. They also shot 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free-throw line and totaled 24 rebounds, 15 assists, nine steals and four blocked shots. 

Allen was 7-of-14 from the field and added four rebounds and a season-high three blocked shots in 33 minutes. Wesley missed only one of eight free throws, knocked down a 3-pointer and had a rebound, an assist and a steal in 32 minutes. 

Sophomore Steven Cervantes made two 3-pointers and finished with 11 points in 25 minutes. He added two rebounds and a team-high three assists. Freshman Aaron Johnson had 10 points, six rebounds off the bench for SMCC, and sophomore Khabri Davis added seven and six rebounds as a reserve. 

Sophomore Kiai Apele had three assists and two points off the bench, and freshman Shamar Grant added seven points and a 3-pointer in 13 minutes as a reserve.
