Phoenix College Defeats SMCC Men's Basketball

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 86-65 to Phoenix College in an ACCAC home game on Feb. 15 at the SMCC Gym. Freshman Jaylen Wesley led SMCC with 26 points and 10 rebounds, but the Bears used a big scoring run at the end of the first half and denied a Cougar rally in the second half to post the road win. 

Phoenix College led 46-31 at halftime and won the second half 40-34. The Cougars shot 29.7 percent (19-of-64) from the field and made 18-of-26 (69.2 percent) free throw attempts. SMCC totaled 28 rebounds, 10 assists and seven steals in the loss. 

Wesley posted his second double-double of the season and knocked down four 3-pointers in 33 minutes. His 26 points matched his season high and set a new season best against a conference rival. 

Sophomore Darien Allen was second on the squad with 13 points. He added three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Sophomore Khabri Davis finished second on the Cougars with eight rebounds, and sophomore Abdi Odowaay scored eight points with two 3-pointers. 

Sophomore Steven Cervantes led SMCC with three assists, and freshman Nahshon Harper had three steals off the bench.
