PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (14-14, 6-14 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale CC 72-71 in an ACCAC road game at the SCC Gym on Feb. 22. The Cougars rallied for a 43-34 second half after trailing by eight at halftime to post the road win and deal the Artichokes a conference home loss. Sophomore Steven Cervantes came off the bench to score a career-high 24 points, freshman Jaylen Wesley finished with 14, and sophomore Khabri Davis added 12 points in the win.

SMCC led 72-71 with 10 seconds to play and had a chance for more points at the free throw line. Unfortunately, the front end of the one-and-one rimmed out and the Artichokes grabbed the rebound and raced down the court. That's where they ran into Davis and sophomore Darien Allen, who stopped the oncoming drive and grabbed the rebound as the buzzer sounded.

SMCC shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the field and a sizzling 62.5 percent (10-of-15) from 3-point range. The Cougars had 30 rebounds, 17 assists, five steals and four blocks in the win.

Cervantes was 8-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-6 from downtown in 26 minutes and added three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Wesley added four rebounds, three assists and three steals in addition to his 14 points, and Davis knocked down two 3-pointers to go with three rebounds and a block.

Freshman Shamar Grant had eight points, two rebounds and an assist off the bench, and sophomore Abdi Odowaay finished with six points, seven rebounds and two assists.
