Second-Round 67 Sends Thompson to South Mountain Classic Title

Sophomore Daniel Thompson carded a tournament-best five-under 67 in the second round of the South Mountain Classic to win Individual Medalist honors by one stroke. As a team, SMCC finished second at the event, held at the Aguila Golf Desert Course on Sept. 19-20 in Laveen, Ariz,  with a team score of five-under 571. 

Thompson finished at three-under 141 over the 36 holes to edge Glendale CC's Jayden McCloud by one stroke for the tournament title. He moved up 10 spots on the leaderboard over the course of the second day after posting a two-over 74 in his first round. 

SMCC opened the tournament with at even par 288 and posted a five-under 283 on the final day to take second. Glendale CC shot 11-under as a team over the final 18 holes to narrowly defeat the Cougars by one stroke. 

Sophomore Ethan Klose tied for third at one-under 143 for the 36 holes. He opened with an even-par 72 and finished the second day at one-under 71. Freshman Bryan Beyer tied for fifth at even-par 144 with rounds of 70 and 74, and freshman Cole Finch tied for eighth at one-over 145 with scores of 73 and 72. 

Freshman Ryan Blair and sophomore Zachary Erskine tied for 10th at two-over 146. Blair posted identical rounds of 73 while Erskine had scores of 72 and 74. Freshman Zack Mumman was 16th at three-over 147 (75 and 72) and freshman Brady Clark tied for 24th at nine-over 153 (74 and 79).

Freshman Tor Jacobson was 32nd at 11-over 155 (78 and 77) and freshman Armaud Antoin was 38th at 20-over 164 (84 and 80).
