
SMCC Men's Golf Wins Home Tournament at -41, Croix Takes Individual Honors

The South Mountain Community College men's golf team won the South Mountain ACCAC Spring Tournament at -41 (535) at Dobson Ranch Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz., over Mar. 24-25. The Cougars posted rounds of 17-under 271 and 24-under 264 to defeat second-place Mesa CC by 27 strokes. Individually, Adam Croix won for the third time this spring by finishing at -13 (131) to edge teammate and sophomore Jorge Parada by two strokes. Freshmen Jaxson Wright and Jack Taylor tied for third at -8 (136), and freshman PJ Segerstrom tied for seventh at -4 (140).
Croix, who previously won the Glendale CC and Estrella Mountain CC Tournaments earlier this season, posted rounds of five-under 67 and a tournament-best eight-under 64. He opened his first round with birdies on four of the first five holes and added two more on the back nine. He followed that up with six birdies, an eagle three on the par-five No. 13, and zero bogeys in his second round to claim individual medalist honors.
Parada finished second with scores of five-under 67 and six-under 66. He led the event after 18 holes, posting seven birdies, including four over the opening nine holes. In the second round, Parada carded seven birdies to finish runner-up.
After strong second rounds, Wright and Taylor tied for third, moving up two spots on the final leaderboard. Wright carded four birdies in his opening round to post a three-under 69. He added four more in his second round, plus a dramatic eagle three on the par-five No. 18 to finish at five-under 67.
Taylor recorded six birdies in his opening round to finish at three-under 69. He then posted four more in his second round and also carded an eagle three on No. 18 to tie with Wright.
Segerstrom opened with four birdies in his first round en route to a four-under 68. In his second round, he had four birdies and was the third Cougar to post an eagle on No. 18 to finish at even-par 72.
Sophomore Basil Strolz competed as an individual and tied for 15th at E (144) with one-under 71 and one-over 73 rounds. He had five birdies in his first round and two in his second.
Freshman Kenny Taylor also competed individually and tied for 20th at +1 (145) with two-over 73 and one-under 71 rounds. He had three birdies in his first round and four in his second.
Freshman Luke Padilla competed as an individual and tied for 22nd at +2 (146) with identical rounds of one-over 73. He birdied four of the final six holes in his first round and added four more in his second round.
Freshman Randy Weis also competed individually, placing 24th at +4 (148) with rounds of three-over 75 and one-over 73. He had three birdies in each of his two rounds.
